Common Dental Emergencies
If you are unsure whether your situation requires urgent care, review the list below. We consider any scenario involving acute pain, bleeding, or trauma to be a priority.
-
Severe Toothache: Persistent, throbbing pain that does not go away with over-the-counter medication.
-
Knocked-Out Tooth: A permanent tooth that has been completely dislodged from the socket.
-
Broken or Chipped Tooth: Fractures that cause pain or leave sharp edges.
-
Lost Filling or Crown: Exposure of the sensitive underlying tooth structure.
-
Abscess or Infection: Swelling in the gums or face, often accompanied by fever or a bad taste in the mouth.
-
Soft Tissue Injuries: Cuts or trauma to the lips, tongue, or cheeks.
What to Expect
When you arrive for an emergency appointment, our primary goal is to alleviate your discomfort.
-
Triage and Assessment: We will quickly assess the severity of your condition and take necessary X-rays to diagnose the problem.
-
Pain Management: Our first step is often to administer local anesthesia or provide medication to stop the pain.
-
Immediate Treatment: Depending on the issue, we may perform a temporary fix (like a sedative filling) or a permanent solution (like a root canal or extraction) to stabilize your oral health.
-
Long-Term Plan: Once the immediate crisis is managed, we will discuss any follow-up treatments needed to fully restore your smile.

What should I do if my tooth gets knocked out?
Time is critical. Pick up the tooth by the crown (the top part), not the root. Rinse it gently with water if it is dirty, but do not scrub it. Try to place it back in the socket. If that is not possible, keep it moist by holding it in your cheek or placing it in a container of milk. Call us immediately. Seeing a dentist within one hour gives the best chance of saving the tooth.
How do I know if my toothache is an emergency?
If your tooth pain is severe enough to distract you from daily activities, keeps you awake at night, or is accompanied by swelling or fever, it is an emergency. Minor sensitivity can sometimes wait, but deep, throbbing pain usually indicates an infection or nerve damage that requires urgent professional attention.
Can I go to the hospital ER for dental problems?
Most hospital emergency rooms are not equipped to treat dental issues. They can provide antibiotics or pain medication, but they typically cannot perform restorative dental procedures like fillings or extractions. For dental emergencies, it is best to visit a dentist who has the specific tools and training to treat the underlying cause.
What if I have a dental emergency on the weekend?
We offer extended hours and weekend appointments to accommodate emergencies. If you experience a problem outside of our regular hours, call our office and listen to the voicemail instructions. We provide guidance for after-hours care and will schedule you for the earliest possible slot.
How much does emergency dental treatment cost?
The cost depends on the specific treatment required, such as an exam, X-ray, filling, or extraction. We follow the current Dental Fee Guide and offer transparent pricing. Before proceeding with any treatment, we will explain the costs and check your insurance coverage so there are no surprises.
